By Jane Ahern Youth Services Manager With the school year about over, the Jefferson County Library is gearing up once again for its annual summer reading program. The statewide theme this year is "Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales." Our program kicks off June 20, with a visit from Hart's Reptile World, featuring lots of reptiles for kids to see and touch. The reptile program is just the first of six weekly programs for children offered by the library this summer. Among other things, we'll be learning how to draw animals, playing games, listening to live music, and doing lots of crafts. Programs will run in Madras on Tuesdays, in Warm Springs on Wednesdays and in Culver on Thursdays. Here's a little background information for those who don't know about the summer reading program: The Oregon Library Association (OLA) belongs to a multi-state organization that collaborates to come up with a theme, commission art work to go along with it, and produce a binder and CD full of graphics and ideas for summer reading activities. Participating libraries take the theme and materials and create their own individual programs around it. The purpose of the summer reading program is to encourage children to read during the summer so that when they go back to school in the fall their skills will still be intact. We also invite babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to sign up as a way to motivate parents to read to their children. In addition to offering weekly activities, we'll be giving out prizes as incentives for reading. By reading for half an hour everyday, kids can earn a variety of small prizes and if they keep at it, they will earn a brand new book and a colorful T-shirt with the summer reading logo on it. More importantly, they are likely to retain or even improve their reading skills. The employees of Bright Wood donated about $900 several months ago for children's library programs and that money will go towards purchasing summer reading T-shirts for participating children. Registration packets will be given out to each child in school. If for some reason your child does not get one, you can pick them up at the library or print them off our Web page at www.jcld.org. Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers may also sign up. Registration is free. I hope to see you at the library this summer! |
