The 22nd Annual Shaniko Days will be held Aug, 1 through 3, with proceeds supporting the Shaniko Volunteer Fire Department. Friday through Sunday there will be vendors, shops, self-tour, museums, food, cowboy and Western folklore talks by armchair historian Joe Carlson. On Saturday, the parade begins at 10 a.m., gunfighter reenactments from noon to 3 p.m., and pit beef barbecue with beef, salad, beans, bread and drink for $7, kids under 12 $5. At 2 p.m., see the premier of a power point program, "Railroads Near Wasco County," by Jerry Tanquist. The first 35 slides of the show will be of the Columbia Southern Railroad which transported wool from Shaniko, making it the largest inland wool-shipping center in the world in the early 1900s. Other railroads featured will be the Mount Hood Railroad, Condon and Kinzua, Goldendale Line, Columbia North Shore, Wishram, Prineville, and a couple of others. Dance downtown at the fire hall to the music of Cheap Local Band, $5 per person. The drawing for the big raffle prize of $200 will be at the dance. On Sunday, Cowboy Church will be offered by Joe Carlson. Call (541) 489-3434 for lodging options in nearby cities as the local hotel and RV park are closed. |
