TV Turnoff help

   To the Editor,
I would like to take a moment to thank community members who provided support for the activities during TV Turnoff Week this year. It was a great week full of meaningful activity and fun. It is gratifying to find people who are willing to support the effort to create a healthy, happy community that has such a positive impact on our children.
Bike Maintenance day was spear-headed by Stan Nowakowski who recruited a great team of bicycle mechanics including Clint Jacks, John Smallwood, Ken Cardwell, Marty Richards, Michael McGinnis, and Will Bean. Mark Carman arranged a great facility in which to operate, and Kelly Kerbow kept the process organized. The Madison Coffee House hosted a lovely evening of live music, and the First Baptist Church provided fun family activities. Ian McMorrow offered lessons in Disc Golf, Kris Pepera supported kids with the Ropes course at Madras High School, and Jane Ahern provided various activities at the library.
The Early Childhood Committee members sponsored a parade to celebrate the Week of the Young Child, with Saving Grace, the Oregon Child Development Coalition (OCDC), the Children's Learning Center, Mid-Columbia Head Start, and Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) providing activities in the park.
The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Coalition members, Jamie Smith, Danna Hastings, Beth Ann Beamer, Scottie Henry, Kelly Kerbow and Barbara Ibrahim were instrumental in coordinating the TV Turnoff effort and obtaining donations. Mountain View Hospital District, Madison Coffee House, the Outpost, Madras Sanitary Service, the Grind and Kah-Nee-Ta Resort provided generous donations.
A big thank you to all of the above, and to all of you who are setting a great example for kids by turning of the TV and doing something healthy and fun instead.
