Yard sale to benefit Relief Nursery

Juniper Junction Community Council and the Jefferson County Commission on Children and Families plan to participate in the Metolius Citywide Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 9, to benefit the start-up of the Juniper Junction Relief Nursery in Jefferson County.
The yard sale will be located at Sweet Virginia's Bed and Breakfast, located at 407 Sixth Street in Metolius.
Community members are invited to participate in this effort by bringing donations or baked goods to Sweet Virginia's Bed and Breakfast on Friday, Aug. 8 between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Relief nurseries provide core services to high-risk families, and outreach services based on community needs. Services include therapeutic early childhood services (and related services such as food and transportation), home visits and parent education classes.
Additional services include respite care and alcohol and drug recovery support.
Relief nurseries have helped create positive outcomes for families, including improving daily family functioning, the quality of parent-child interactions, and reducing overall risk.
Jefferson County has a history of high child abuse rates. Statistics show 69 child victims in 2003, 98 in 2004, 85 in 2005, 65 in 2006 and 42 in 2007.
Steve Hillis, Juniper Junction Community Council treasurer and secretary noted, "The goal is to have the Juniper Junction Relief Nursery in operation by Oct. 8, 2008, with services for families beginning in January 2009."
Hillis added, "The team has secured $24,000 along with pending grant proposals. The total fundraising goal by the end of the year is $100,000 which will pay for the first year's operation expenses."
Volunteers are still needed for the yard sale. For more information, contact Kelly Kerbow at the Jefferson County Commission on Children and Families at 325-5040.
Juniper Junction Community Council is a nonprofit organization. Tax-deductible contribution checks may be mailed to P.O. Box 940, Madras, OR 97741. The Juniper Junction Community Council tax ID number is 93-1220493.
