Youth services coordinator Patrick Goodman, left, with Friends of the Library members Bonnie Bahn, Gloria Comingore, and Janice Alexander celebrate the grant award.
The Jefferson County Library District has been selected as one of only three Oregon libraries to win the 2010 Libri Foundation books grant.
This year, the Libri Foundation will be matching private donations given to the library by individuals, and the Friends of the Library at a two-to-one ratio. The library has also been awarded an additional $450 for new math and science books.
"This is very exciting for us," said children's librarian Patrick Goodman. "The staff at the library is doing an incredible job in helping educate, entertain, and inspire our area's youth, and we're extremely grateful to everyone who made accepting this grant possible."
The library's checkout numbers for juveniles and teens have skyrocketed over the last couple of years, and the high quality books received from the Libri Foundation will only help to keep this upward trend moving.
"Books have a unique way of developing creativity and imagination in children that television and computer games just don't have," explained Goodman.
"If these numbers continue to go up, the future looks very bright for the youths of Jefferson County," he added.
