By Gary Lindberg The dates for Madras High fall athletes to remember are coming up quickly. Practices start on Monday, Aug. 18, for football, boys and girls soccer, volleyball and cross country. During the first week, practice times vary by sport First week practice times for football are 4-6 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. at the MHS football field; volleyball: 7-9 a.m. and 5:30-8 p.m. at MHS gym; boys soccer: 8-10 a.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. at MHS soccer field; girls soccer: 7-9 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. at MHS soccer field; cross country: 6-7:30 p.m. at MHS gym. To be eligible, all athletes must fill out the required forms before starting practice. These include: MHS athletic eligibility, parent approval form, random drug testing consent form, emergency contact card and physical form. Athletes must have a physical every two years with the paperwork on an approved physical form. . Free sports physicals start at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11 at two locations: the United Methodist Church (49 N.E. 12th St., located next to Mountain View Hospital) and Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center (1270 Kat-Num Road). The physicals are open to Madras and Culver students entering the sixth to 12th grades. Athletes should wear shorts and girls should wear sports bras. . A fall sports parent informational night is set for 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14 in the MHS commons. All of the fall head coaches will be at the meeting to answer questions and outline expectations. Practice schedules for the opening week of practice will also be distributed. MHS athletic director Steve Johnson will also cover the district's eligibility rules. . ImPACT testing for football, boys and girls soccer is required. This test will be used as a barometer in case an athlete sustains a concussion, done by the Center Foundation in Bend through a grant by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "All of the other Central Oregon schools are involved, and now we're able to as well," said Johnson.. The Center does a preassessment of each athlete and stores the data. If an athlete is suspected of having a concussion, the Center will conduct another assessment to determine any changes. "This will give a true assessment of the athlete's condition," Johnson said. "We don't want an athlete saying they feel fine and have consequences later on." Testing times for football are 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 14; for girls soccer, 4 p.m.. Aug. 11 and 13, for boys soccer, 1 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 13. Basketball and wrestlers will also be tested. A multi-sport athlete needs to do this test just once a sports season. . The Bruce Brown tour on roles of parents and athletes at Summit High in Bend is on Aug. 20 and 21. This event is divided into three sessions, all free and registration is not required. "Parent's Role in Athletics" is the first session, starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20. A 50-minute session entitled "First Steps to Great Teams" starts at 9 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 21. The final session, "Redefining the Term Athlete" starts at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 21. The seminar's speaker is a teacher, coach and athletic administrator for 35 years. Brown has won numerous national awards. For more information, see the Web site at: www.proactivecoaching.info. |
