Murphy fair

To the Editor, Too bad that this year's county fair was such a disappointment, at least to myself. Guess that old man Murphy had to employ his law. (Murphy's Law). Hundreds of feet of security fence were erected for the helicopter rides. Of course the helicopter pulled a no-show. For the carnival-goers, one of the main rides broke. Some of the exhibitors also pulled a no-show. The gate receipts were down probably due to our economy, or lack of.

Homelessness on agenda at area town halls

Two local men have made it their mission to keep the issue of homelessness on people's minds. Walt Chamberlain, Madras city councilor and pastor of the Madras Christian Church, and Gary Buss, who is retired and active in the Living Hope Christian Center, hope the community -- officials, interested citizens and the homeless -- will join them for a Town Hall Meeting on Homelessness Thursday, July 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Jefferson County Senior Center. The meeting is one of six Town Halls across Central Oregon scheduled for the same day and time -- in Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Sisters and La Pine, besides the local meeting. Each is part of a regionwide effort, organized by participants in the 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness, to figure out what can be done about homelessness.

Mountains of inspiration

The Movin' Mountains Slimdown Challenge is done for 2010, and we hope that participants had a chance to experience the joy of improved physical health, try a few activities that were new, and embrace some lifestyle changes that will be permanent. We honor the winners, but realize there are many stories to tell beyond those first three places, stories that we hope will inspire and lift up all of us as we journey together toward better health. There were stories of learning to use physical fitness as a tool to manage or even delay the onset of chronic disease. One participant from Warm Springs is just trying to stave off progression to diabetes. An athletic person by nature, he had allowed his weight to creep up over the years, and was identified as at-risk for diabetes. He began the Warm Springs Diabetes Prevention Program, and had already lost 34 pounds when he entered the health challenge in March. His percent of improvement for the 16 weeks of the health challenge was 11 percent, furthering his ability to keep diabetes at bay.

Ellsbury still on shelf, Ceciliani continues to hit

Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury is still rehabilitating from a rib injury he sustained during an outfield collision April 11, while Darrell Ceciliani continues to lead the Brooklyn Cyclones in batting average. Ellsbury has been in Florida working his way back from fractured ribs after missing all but nine games this season due to the injury, and the outfielder resumed baseball activities last week after working out at the Athletes Performance facility in Arizona for more than a month. He has underwent some scrutiny in the Boston papers for rehabilitating for so long away from the team, but Ellsbury appears to be on his way back to the Boston starting lineup soon, according to reports.

Wakeboarders go big

Wakeboarders soared through the air July 17 and spectators let them hear about it on Lake Billy Chinook during the 13th Annual Sundance Water Sports wakeboarding and water ski contest held on the Crooked River Arm. Just over 50 boats filled with spectators cheered as novice to advanced wakeboarders screamed past them competing for bragging rights and enjoying ideal lake conditions. "We had great water, great weather and I'm not sure we could have asked for better conditions," said event coordinator Russ Brewer. "We could have used a few more contestants, but overall it was a fantastic event once again."

Deadline nearing for youth tackle football registration

If your child would like to participate in youth tackle football this fall, parents must register players by Aug. 1. The program, which is ran by the Bend Park and Recreation District, welcomes student athletes in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades for the 2010-1011 school years. All participants from Jefferson County will play together. "This is a great opportunity for kids to learn the basics of tackle football," said Carl Lindgren, who helps organize the Jefferson County players. "We really need to get players registered as soon as possible."

How I See It, By Joe McHaney

For the second consecutive year, I was paid to hang out on Lake Billy Chinook. That's right; I was actually given money to spend time on the banks of LBC and on boats to take pictures of the annual Sundance Water Sports wakeboarding and water ski competition. I had to get up on Saturday and Sunday mornings, bathe in SPF 50 to protect my movie star like skin and dress in swim trunks, T-shirt and sandals. My my, life is rough sometimes. Seems hard to imagine, but it's true and I enjoyed the competition once again. There is only one problem with the event -- lack of participants. Why? I'm not sure other than people are perhaps scared to ride in front of hundreds of spectators.

HUD prepares action

Two years after an onsite review of Warm Springs Housing Authority's program found numerous violations, a federal agency is preparing to take enforcement action. According to Lee Jones, Northwest regional public affairs officer for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the department sent a letter of warning to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs on March 26. The letter, sent out by the HUD Grants Evaluation Division, was the beginning of a formal process, Jones said. It was addressed to Tribal Chairman Ron Suppah Sr., with copies to Jody Calica, secretary treasurer, and Scott Moses, acting executive director of the Warm Springs Housing Authority.

Time to end the OLCC?

Don't mess with a guy in his garage. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission was established nine days after the repeal of prohibition, during a special session of the Oregon Legislature, held under the shadow of fear of the chaos an alcohol business free of government control would surely render onto society. It's been in the crosshairs for years by those who think it's overbearing, antibusiness, monopolistic, outdated and a waste of precious government funds.

Inspired thanks

To the Editor, With the recent losses of our dear friends John Houck, Mac Lange, and Ruth Rufener I am reminded at how brief life is and how easy it is to take for granted the good things and good people in our lives. So before I die (or retire in a few more years) I simply wanted to express my thankfulness to so many of you who have and continue to enrich our lives in this community of Madras and Jefferson County and who have helped my family and me for these past 28 years. In July of 1982, I was looking for work. The memory of wonderful people like Oscar Lange and Sumner Rodriquez, who had worked heroically to help my wife's family after the horrific fire of 1966, drew us naturally to Madras. In August, I was hired by 509-J to teach second grade students in Warm Springs. I am very thankful for all the people of our school district who have made these years of teaching children from Warm Springs and Metolius possible and successful. I give thanks to the parents and families who have entrusted their precious children into my care. I give thanks to the patrons and supporters of our district for the facilities, materials, and leadership provided through the efforts of the members of the school district's board of directors. I am grateful for the leadership of my administrators over the years and for the support and camaraderie of my fellow teachers and all of the support staff that have made success possible. I especially thank the teachers' union leadership through these years that has worked with all parties to ensure a safe and stable teaching experience for all the teachers and students in our district.
