Chase, gunfire entangle rancher, poacher

Like a scene out of an old Western, an October poaching incident turned into a 30-mile chase with gunfire from three separate vehicles. Two of the players in the incident -- a poacher and a rancher -- have both been sentenced for their parts in the incident, while a good samaritan, who stopped to help, awaits sentencing. The poacher, Johnathan M. Parker, 25, of Culver, was sentenced March 1 to 210 days (seven months) in the Jefferson County Correctional Facility for two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, Class C felonies, for firing his .308 caliber, semi-automatic rifle at the rancher and the good samaritan -- a custodial supervisor at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution.

509-J considers drastic action

With Madras High School among Oregon's list of poor-performing Tier II schools, the 509-J District is mulling the opportunity to receive millions of dollars in federal grants. "We need to look at the opportunities and challenges," said Superintendent Rick Molitor, noting, "There is the potential of half a million to $2 million per year for three years, which means there is up to $6 million available to the district." "That's a big carrot, but we also have to ask what is the big whip?" Molitor said.

Bad call

To the Editor, I worked with Jefferson County Little League (JCLL) for 15 years; 11 years as a coach. I managed five all-star teams with two district championships and one state championship. Additionally, I played Little League in Jefferson County and was on three all-star teams. Twenty-three years later, one of my all-star coaches, Lyle Rhoan, Sr. even coached my oldest son in all-stars. I wanted you to know my background with JCLL before saying more... My first three to five years as a coach I did not like playing in Warm Springs. The teams were not always ready to play on time. The umpires did not always make the right calls, and when all-star tryouts began, Warm Springs parents wanted all their kids on the team.

Headin' Outdoors with Scott Staats

My full attention remained on the small fly as it floated on the surface, even though I wanted to look up at the towering volcanic cliffs surrounding me. My fishing partner, Yukon, fished from the other side of the river as we engaged in a little friendly competition. I consider him an expert fly angler and consider myself a mere beginner, and he likes to remind me of this. A few fish were rising and it looked to be a good day of fishing on the Crooked River. The falling snow added to the beauty of the canyon and I ignored the chill in the air and in my fingertips. There have been times when we've both caught lots of fish on the river and times when we've both been skunked but there were never times when I out-fished him -- yet.

The award passed him up last season and could have been handed to Madras' Austin Say last year. The then junior point guard had a tremendous season, but the Intermountain Conference Player of the Year was awarded to a deserving Brady Brent of Mountain View, who led the Cougars to an IMC regular-season championship. "I was disappointed because I felt that I had earned it," Say said. "Brady Brent is a fantastic player, but we went from the No. 1 team in the IMC to the No. 3 team (after a late season slump) and I think coaches were unable to overlook that."

Many of the 141 cats which were removed from a Madras woman's residence have found homes, according to the three Central Oregon animal shelters involved. In December of 2009, a Madras woman who had been taking in stray and unwanted cats, voluntarily asked the Jefferson County Kennel for help after she became overwhelmed with animals. At the home, kennel manager Renee Davidson found over 50 cats in cages, others running loose, and cat feces and urine everywhere.

Foreclosures down in Jefferson County

Not so long ago, analysts predicted declining foreclosure numbers in the state of Oregon in 2010, but after two months of continued increases, there appear to be more foreclosures on the horizon in 2010. According to county-by-county data for the month of January, released by Eugene-based Gorilla Capital, the state's largest purchaser of homes sold at foreclosure auction, foreclosures were up in most counties. Jefferson County bucked the trend and saw a decrease of 27 percent, based on notices of default. A notice of default is the first step in the foreclosure process.

These days, the only thing stopping Culver from winning multiple individual state championships is Culver itself. Mitch Nelson, who won the OSAA Class 2A/1A 119-pound state championship last season was well on his way to matching his brother's feat of back-to-back state titles last weekend at the state wrestling meet held at Portland's Memorial Coliseum. The Culver sophomore stormed to the final as the 125-pound No. 2 seed, winning by fall and 9-5 in the semifinals. His semifinal victory secured a berth in the finale, but it would not be against an unfamiliar opponent.

Culver's Ryan Kasch was devastated after he fell short of winning the OSAA Class 2A/1A 119-pound state championship Feb. 27 at Portland's Memorial Coliseum on championship night of the state tournament. The sophomore was pinned in the third round and was visibly upset afterwards. He kneeled to the mat, put his hands over his head and gathered himself emotionally. It was an up-and-down night for the skilled wrestler. His brother Jared, a CHS freshman, earned the 103-pound 2A/1A state title just two matches before he lost, but when asked minutes after his defeat about what the difference was in his match, he quickly turned the conversation towards his brother, who was also named the 2A/1A Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.

The 140-pounder proved to be just that -- a champion. Brunner, the bracket's No. 1 overall seed, stormed to the final where he left no doubt that he was the state's top Class 5A 140-pounder by defeating his biggest rival in Hermiston's Matt Kilsdonk by technical fall 15-0 with 1:09 left in the match.

MHS alum seeks kidney donor

At the 20th reunion for Madras High School class of 1983, Kim Wagner learned that former classmate Patrick Short was in need of a kidney transplant, and is trying to spread the word. In an e-mail to friends, Short explained his situation. Twenty years ago, when he was 24 and had just graduated from the University of Oregon, his younger sister donated a kidney to him. He had lost both his kidneys to a strep bacterial infection.
